À l’aube de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le titre de la présente œuvre paraît traduire en un mot franc l’état d’esprit dans lequel se trouve l’ensemble de la scène artistique, et particulièrement la communauté d’intellectuels roumains dont Victor Brauner fait partie, face à l’émergence du conflit franco-allemand. La tourmente liée à ce contexte historique se mêle au cheminement personnel de l’artiste, qui déploie d’autant plus son lexique pictural, d’inspiration primitive, et tirant ses influences de différentes traditions culturelles et pratiques ésotériques. Élevé par un père épris de spiritualisme et de mysticisme, Brauner développe lui-même un intérêt certain pour l’occulte, l’art kabbalistique, la mythologie et la magie. Aussi cherche-t-il, à travers ses œuvres, à plonger dans le royaume mystérieux d’un monde au-delà du visible. Dans la présente œuvre, deux personnages féminins, composés d’éléments biomorphiques autant que de symboles relevant du pictogramme, semblent fuir sans but entre d’angoissantes masses sombres qui encadrent la scène.
Victor Brauner s’installe à Paris en 1938, date à laquelle il perd l’usage de son œil lors d’une altercation entre Óscar Domínguez et Esteban Francès. Cet accident marque considérablement son œuvre, et l’on peut imaginer dans la figure sans visage un rappel de la béance laissée par la mutilation que l’artiste a subie. Comme pris dans un goulot d’étranglement, les deux êtres errent, aveugles. La présente toile s’inscrit dans la série des lycanthropes, ou chimères, que Brauner réalise de fin 1938 à fin 1939, et qui mettent en scène des êtres hybrides, composites, évoluant dans un environnement nébuleux et « flou ». Empruntant au registre littéraire du fantastique, où l’association d’éléments connus suscite pourtant un trouble en en perturbant la logique, Brauner fait advenir un espace propre, dans lequel chacun peut s’abandonner au vertige de l’inconnu suggéré.
At the dawn of World War II, the title of this work seems to convey with one frank word the state of mind of the entire art scene, especially the Romanian intellectual community to which Victor Brauner belonged, as the Franco-German conflict began. The torment associated with that historical context merges with the artist's personal journey, making him all the more adept at deploying his Primitive-inspired pictorial language and tapping into his influences from different cultural traditions and esoteric practices. Raised by a father infatuated with spiritualism and mysticism, Brauner himself developed a certain interest in the occult, Kabbalistic art, mythology and magic. Thus, in his work, he sought to dive into the mysterious realm of a world beyond the visible. In this work, two female characters composed of biomorphic elements and symbols akin to pictograms seem to flee aimlessly amongst the dark, frightening masses that frame the scene.
