En 1926-27, Max Ernst invente sa technique du « grattage », qui consiste à appliquer plusieurs couches de peinture sur une toile, puis à placer celle-ci sur une surface texturée avant de racler la peinture afin d'en révéler les différentes strates de couleurs. Ce procédé lui offre, confie-t-il, « le moyen technique d'augmenter le pouvoir hallucinatoire de l'esprit pour que les 'visions' puissent survenir automatiquement » (W. Hopkins, Ernst at Surreallism’s dawn, Munich, 1993, p. 157).
Comme pour d'autres méthodes surréalistes telles que l'automatisme ou la décalcomanie, le hasard joue un rôle essentiel dans le grattage et pousse Ernst à redoubler de créativité pour explorer son imagination. Après une première série de travaux consacrés à des motifs de fleurs et de coquillages, l'artiste va mettre le grattage au service de toute une gamme de sujets plus ou moins fantaisistes, employant la technique pour entremêler éléments réels et fantasmés.
Les Papillons constitue un exemple particulièrement lyrique de cette recherche de formes naturelles. Joë Bousquet, l'écrivain et poète français, fondateur de la revue littéraire Les Cahiers du sud, en sera le premier propriétaire. Blessé sur le front de la Grande Guerre, à la bataille de Vailly, l'auteur paralysé gère ses affaires depuis son appartement à Carcassonne, dans le Midi. La distance ne l'empêche pas, toutefois, de tisser des liens forts avec les cercles intellectuels parisiens et les grands esprits de son temps. Bousquet noue notamment de grandes amitiés avec Jean Paulhan, Paul Éluard ou Max Ernst, lequel lui fait personnellement cadeau de la présente œuvre.

As Ernst himself stated, the technique gave him “the technical means of augmenting the hallucinatory capacity of the mind so that “visions” could occur automatically” (W. Hopkins, Ernst at Surreallism’s dawn, Munich, 1993, p. 157).
As with other surrealist techniques, such as decalcomania or automatism, happenstance played a central role in grattage, inspiring Ernst to explore his imagination through the act of creation. Following an initial series of works focusing on flower and shell motifs, Ernst went on to use grattage across a broad range of extant and imagined subject matter, employing the technique itself to unite elements of the real and imaginary.

Paralyzed at the front during the first world war battle of Vailly, Bousquet conducted his affairs from his apartment in the Southern town of Carcassonne. The distance from the intellectual hub of Paris proved little impediment to his ability to develop strong relationships with the leading minds of his time, and he would form close friendships with contemporaries including Jean Paulhan, Paul Éluard and Max Ernst, who gifted him the present work.
