Après un court séjour au Bateau-Lavoir chez son ami Picasso, où il découvre les premières études pour Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Pablo Gargallo devient dès 1907 le premier artiste à mener des recherches cubistes en matière de sculpture. Si la Grande Guerre vient brusquement interrompre ses explorations, son retour en 1924 à Paris, où il renoue d'anciennes amitiés – avec Picasso, Lipchitz, Laurens, Gris, entre autres – marque un regain de créativité. L'atelier que lui laisse le peintre Vincent Monteiro, avenue du Maine, au cœur du Montparnasse effervescent, y contribue grandement. C'est probablement à cette adresse que Gargallo conçoit Petite Star.
Au-delà de son travail révolutionnaire de la feuille de métal et de son rôle essentiel dans la sculpture cubiste, l'un des aspects les plus remarquables de l'œuvre de cet Espagnol demeure son double amour pour le moderne et le classique, qui cohabitent continuellement dans son œuvre. En 1927, notamment, il produit plusieurs sculptures en découpes de fer et de cuivre, parmi lesquelles Petite Star, ses masques d'Arlequin et un autoportrait, mais modèle aussi des œuvres plus traditionnelles en ronde-bosse, comme Maternité et Jeune Homme à la marguerite. Ce paradoxe stylistique est précisément ce qui nourrit son approche inédite de la sculpture moderne. Avec son jeu de formes convexes et concaves, où les vides viennent modeler les volumes, Petite Star en constitue un exemple remarquable. Chez Gargallo, la forme s'adapte au fond, la technique et le support se plient aux caprices du sujet. Le sculpteur estime que « la construction métallique s'applique aux portraits, aux figures en mouvement et aux figures symboliques. La terre et la fonte s'appliquent aux figures immobiles et à la nudité, qu'elle soit féminine – le plus souvent – ou masculine ».
Parmi ces portraits se distinguent ceux de Kiki de Montparnasse et de l'actrice suédoise d'Hollywood, Greta Garbo (1905-1990). Ce sont les traits de cette dernière que l'on devine dans Petite Star. « Le charme de son visage tient à la coiffure, au dessin des lèvres, au battement des cils, à la douceur des lignes. » Or, d'après Gargallo, la culture populaire aurait tant vampirisé l'humanité de Garbo qu'« elle n'a plus de visage mais seulement de longs cils, des yeux calmes, une bouche parfaite, des boucles. Faire son portrait, ce ne peut être donc que fixer dans le métal ces quelques éléments, distinctifs et suffisants - fixer ces stéréotypes séduisants – ceux de la Petite Star et de la Romantica. Toutes deux appartiennent à la mythologie du monde contemporain telle que le cinéma et la photographie l'inventent et la répandent ». Ce visage que l'artiste décrit en détail est représenté dans Petite Star avec une élégance et une justesse frappantes. On y retrouve ce langage artistique débordant d’ingéniosité qui a fait de Gargallo l'un des grands maîtres de la sculpture d'avant-garde au XXe siècle.

Le critique d'art, poète, écrivain et conservateur belge fait alors partie de son cercle d'amis parisiens au même titre qu'André Warnod, Waldemar George ou Pierre Courthion. Paul Fierens est notamment reconnu pour ses écrits sur l'impressionnisme, l'art flamand et sur James Ensor, dont il a publié une série de dessins dans un ouvrage paru en 1944.
As early as 1907, after a short stay in Paris with his friend Picasso at the Bateau-Lavoir where he discovered the first studies for Les demoiselles d’Avignon, Pablo Gargallo became the first artist to explore sculpture under a cubist perspective. Whereas the onset of the World War I had abruptly interrupted his experiments, his return to Paris in 1924 and to prior friendships – with Picasso, Lipchitz, Laurens, Gris , among others – gave him a fresh creative boost, especially when he settled in the studio left to him by the painter Vincent Monteiro located avenue du Maine, at the heart of the bustling area of Montparnasse – possibly where he executed Petite Star.
In addition to Gargallo’s revolutionary work with metal sheets to produce ground-breaking sculptures, and his pivotal role in terms of his contribution towards Cubist sculpture, one of the most remarkable features of this Catalan’s oeuvre is the endless juxtaposition of the modern versus the more classical sculptures he produced within the same time range. For example, the same year Petite Star was executed in 1927, he also realized several other works in cut out metal and copper sheets such as his Arlequin’s masks and a self-portrait, whilst at the same time modelling the more traditional three-dimensional sculptures of Maternité and Jeune Homme à la marguerite. This apparent paradox with regards to his style is precisely what fueled his innovative approach to modern sculpture, a prime example of which is Petite Star, characterized by its play on concave and convex shapes, allowing volumes to be modelled by empty spaces. Furthermore, he adapted technique and medium to his subject, opting for "metallic constructions that are applied to portraits, figures who are in action and symbolical figures. Clay and casts are used for still figures and to nudity, whether female – which is most often the case – or male".
One of the examples of these portraits was that of Kiki de Montparnasse and of Swedish Hollywood actress Greta Garbo (1905-1990), the latter of whose features are encapsulated in Petite Star: "the beauty of her face resides in her hairstyle, in the outline of her lips, in the flutter of her eyelashes, in the softness of her lines [...] " yet due to the way in which her humanity was transformed by popular culture, ‘she had no more face but simply long eyelashes, calm eyes, a perfect mouth, a few curls. Realizing her portrait was nothing more than fixing within the metal sheets those few elements, easily distinguishing and sufficient, fixing those attractive stereotypes – those found in Petite Star and the Romantica. Both belong to the contemporary world’s mythology, similar to that propagated by cinema and photography". Greta Garbo’s iconic facial features mentioned above are perfectly captured by Gargallo in Petite Star, with such elegance and interpreted through his own ingenious personal artistic lexicon, confirming his top rank in 20th century avant-garde sculpture.
Petite Star was purposely designed by Gargallo for the Belgian art critic, poet, writer and curator Paul Fierens (1895-1957), who was part of the artist’s Parisian circle of friends, alongside fellow critics André Warnod, Waldemar George and Pierre Courthion. Paul Fierens was best known for his publications on Impressionism, on Flemish Art and on James Ensor, publishing some of the latter’s drawings in a book in 1944.
