Mike is short for Mike-neko, which is Japanese for tabby cat. That’s the name that Foujita gave to the cat with whom he and Youki shared their lives, first in their Passy apartment and then in their Art Deco villa on the Square de Montsouris. Mike was the only living creature that Foujita would allow in his studio when he was busy working there. As he moved around, silently and gracefully, not one of Mike’s gestures would escape the gaze of the painter looking out for this living beauty, who inspired the lines, forms and colours he created with infinite finesse.
Foujita never stopped drawing, painting and even etching images of Mike. Mike also had friends who would invite themselves onto the Foujitas’ territory. The cat became an icon in their home, and soon a totem of the artist’s Œuvre, a sacred being, similarly to in Japan where they are believed to be inhabited by supernatural spirits. Curled up asleep, Mike is immortalised on the canvas like a woman adored by the painter, a female nude, with just as much tenderness and sensuality, with softness and splendid precision. His coat is shapely, and he wears an expression of delight.
Soon, the very same cat will climb onto his master’s shoulder whilst he draws a self-portrait.
In the studio, Foujita and the animal were one, sharing a deep understanding, the same supple grace and agility, a common vivacity and focus.
"I think that cats were given to men so that they could learn from them about women", Foujita liked to say. "Who could argue with me when I say that cats, like women, take on a new and more radiant beauty in artificial light?" he added.
