"People think painting and writing consist of reproducing forms and likeness. But the paintbrush is meant to make things emerge from chaos"
Zao Wou-Ki
“I paint my own life, but I’m also trying to paint an invisible space, the dream world—that place where we always feel balanced, even in the tumultuous presence of opposite forces. Each painting, from the smallest to the largest, is a part of this same dream world.”
Zao Wou-Ki
Lightning cuts through the darkness of the night; the surface lights up in a searing flash. 16.1.62 captures this lightning bolt and reveals the invisible. The sky’s vastness is compacted into an intimate format, but it loses none of its potency. Dazzled eyes gradually refocus to discover a painting by Zao Wou-Ki dated 1962, presented to the public for the first time.
Surmounted by a band of intense black, the vertical composition is split through the middle by a downward flourish of brush strokes forming a fine network of scattered, dynamic lines. At times dense and emphatic, at times hastily applied, others projected onto the canvas with the dripping technique; the strokes are never twice the same. Free and dancing, agile and untameable, they take the viewer’s eye on a frantic waltz from left to right. Amidst this effervescent energy, the lines expand and contract, then explode and slowly scatter into diffuse and sinuous filaments.
With traditional Chinese painting where black ink is the only medium, art as a whole relies on masterful brush strokes. By playing with variations in density, thickness and dilution, black ink alone on a white surface can produce a myriad of visual effects. In 16.1.62, using only nuances of black and white, Zao Wou-Ki reconnects with his pictorial tradition. The juxtaposition of black and white symbolises the duality of Yin and Yang, the opposite and complementary forces of the cosmos. The sharp contrast between these colours creates an intense resonance that opens up a new dimension. The black background shies away, distancing itself, tempting the viewer to dive in and enter an endless void unrestricted by the confines of the frame.
Five years earlier, in 1957, the artist traveled to New York with Pierre and Colette Soulages and there he discovered the masters of Abstract Expressionism: Mark Tobey, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Mark Rothko. This was a journey of initiation. When he returned to Paris a year later, he abandoned figuration for good and decided to explore the possibilities of abstraction. He created impastos, smeared the surface, spattered paint, incised the pictorial layer and played with matter. Zao took risks, dabbled and experimented. 16.1.62 is a particularly good example of this experimental phase in the painter’s artistic career.
Born into a family of talented calligraphers, trained at the Hangzhou Academy and then at the Grande-Chaumière art studio in Paris, it was entirely natural for Zao Wou-Ki to blend the quintessence of Chinese painting with western techniques. Under his brush strokes, which unveil an uncharted universe between silence and turmoil, 16.1.62 depicts a new pictorial language that lifts off the barriers – now suddenly rendered obsolete – between East and West.
