Y. Riopelle, Jean Paul Riopelle, Catalogue Raisonné 1939-1953, Tome I, Montréal, 1999, No. 1953.046H.1953 (illustré en couleurs p. 389).
A myriad of colours jostle on the surface of Untitled by Jean Paul Riopelle. Intense black sets the tone for a symphony of sky blue, green and flat white mingling merrily with fiery red, crimson and ochre. Applied in successive layers on the entire surface, like an all-over painting, they mix and match in coagulated streaks. The artist's finishing touches can be seen on top. Fine sprays of paint flicked on the canvas hug the clotted grooves and accentuate the work's colourful intensity.
Riopelle's gestures and movements, visible in Untitled, invite comparison with the father of abstract expressionism, Jackson Pollock. Via the fervent splashing and dripping of colour, both men helped shape expressive and non-figurative art in the postwar era. Riopelle came to Paris in 1947, and in 1951 his work was featured with Pollock's in the Véhémences confrontées exhibition at the Nina Dausset gallery. But the Canadian distanced himself from his American counterpart: where Pollock danced on the floor, Riopelle bound himself to the easel, and in contrast to the action painter's flowing, intertwined lines he preferred short and thick flats sculpted with a knife, as in Sans titre.
Riopelle's thought underlies his originality. For just when abstraction ruled supreme he denied its very existence, stating "Those of my paintings considered the most abstract were for me the most figurative in the proper sense of the word [...] In fact, abstraction doesn't exist in painting" (quoted in G. Érouart, Entretiens avec Jean Paul Riopelle, Québec, 1993). Instead his expressiveness came from a heightened sensitivity to nature, which he got from his native Canada with its dense forests and infinite green expanses. Untitled and other paintings reflect this original bond: "[They] are the after-effects, the repercussions of my relationship with reality, with nature, with what I see, with life" (quoted in Riopelle, chasseur d’images, Montréal, Editions France-Amérique, 1981).
Halfway between acclaimed abstraction and fringe figuration, in the early 1950s, Riopelle garnered the attention of the art world and critics. It was in 1953 that his work gained recognition on the other side of the Atlantic. Barely 30, he began exhibiting at the famous Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York. That same year, he took part in the Younger European Painters travelling exhibition, which kicked off at The Guggenheim. Painted that eventful year, Sans titre is a product of its time as much as it typifies Riopelle's singular mind straddling two continents with only freedom for a horizon.
