Disposés sur une bande horizontale vermillon et un fond gris translucide, les Fruits de Nicolas de Staël semblent flotter dans l’espace qui les accueille. De la nature, ils ne conservent que les formes ; la couleur, elle, tend à les extraire de la figuration. L’expression de leur volume est ainsi restreinte à des aplats cristallins de couleurs franches, posés sur un apprêt noir : une poire vert d’eau en côtoie une autre exécutée dans un rouge-orangé éclatant, suivie d’un fruit arrondi qui tire l’orange vers les tons bruns.
Refusant l’opposition à la mode entre la figuration et l’abstraction, Staël s’emploie dès 1952 à ancrer ses compositions dans le réel, figurant désormais des pommes, des bouteilles et des paysages. Il explique alors à son galeriste Jacques Dubourg son rapport à la tradition : « Il s’agit toujours et avant tout de faire de la bonne peinture traditionnelle et il faut se le dire tous les matins, tout en rompant la tradition en toute apparence parce qu’elle n’est même pour personne » (Lettre à Jacques Dubourg, juin 1952). Avec ses Fruits Staël s’inscrit dans la grande histoire de la nature morte, celle qui a vu lui précéder les œuvres baroques de Chardin autant que les pommes de Cézanne.
Mais son travail unique de coloriste et l’exécution fluide et éthérée de ses formes donnent à sa toile une vibration unique radicalement différente de ses aînés. Les Fruits de Staël participent en cela au renouveau de sa peinture au tournant de l’année 1954 : il abandonne alors les pâtes épaisses pour la peinture lisse, le couteau pour le pinceau et la brosse. Sa palette s’éclaircit au contact de la lumière intense du Midi, où il s’installe en 1953, et des paysages de Sicile qu’il visite à l’été. La tension chromatique de ses Fruits rappelle ainsi ses vues rouges et jaunes d’Agrigente, exécutées au début de l’année 1954.

Heurté par les réactions, Staël prend la plume pour justifier sa démarche nouvelle, celle-là même qui a précédé à l’élaboration de ses Fruits luminescents : « J’ai besoin pour me renouveler pour me développer de fonctionner toujours différemment d’une chose à l’autre sans esthétique à priori. On accorde fort, fin, très fin, valeurs directes, indirectes ou l’envers de la valeur, ce qui importe c’est que ce soit juste » (Lettre à Douglas Cooper, janvier 1955).
Arranged on a horizontal vermilion strip and a translucent grey background, Nicolas de Staël’s Fruits seem to float in the space that they occupy. All that they retain of their natural state is their shape; meanwhile the colour seeks to draw from figuration. Their volume is confined to expression through crystalline, flat tints of pure colours, applied over a black primer: a sea-green pear is positioned next to another one rendered in a bright orangey red, followed by a rounded fruit that pulls the orange towards brown tones.
De Staël refused to set figuration against abstraction as was the fashion, and from 1952 he would root his compositions in reality whilst taking a figurative approach to apples, bottles and landscapes. He explained his relationship with tradition to his gallerist Jacques Dubourg: “It is always and above all about good traditional painting and one needs to tell oneself that every morning whilst seemingly breaking with tradition, because it is different for everyone” (letter to Jacques Dubourg, June 1952). With his Fruits, de Staël secured his place in the great history of still life, following in the wake of Chardin’s Baroque works and Cézanne’s apples.
But his unique approach to colour and the fluid, ethereal rendering of his forms gave his work a unique energy which was radically different from that of his elders. In this sense, de Staël’s Fruits belong to a new chapter in his painting which began towards the start of 1954: he abandoned his thick impasto in favour of smoother painting, swapping his knife for brushes. His palette grew lighter on encountering the intense light of the Midi, where he settled in 1953, and the landscapes of Sicily, which he visited in the summer. The chromatic tension of his Fruits also recalls his red and yellow views of Agrigento, which he painted at the start of 1954.
Marked by intense productivity, this period shook de Staël’s convictions: following the success of his exhibition in February at Rosenberg’s gallery in New York, reviews for his June exhibition at Dubourg in Paris took a very different tone. Hurt by the reactions, de Staël put pen to paper to defend his new approach; the very one that preceded the conception of his luminescent Fruits: “To renew myself and develop, I need always to function differently, going from one thing to another with no preconceived aesthetic. Whether we give, strongly and subtly, very subtly, values, direct or indirect or the opposite of value, what is important is that it is right” (letter to Douglas Cooper, January 1955).
