Dans le catalogue publié à l’occasion de l’exposition Joan Miró: Materiality and Metamorphosis (Fundação de Serralve, Porto, octobre 2016 – juin 2017), le commissaire d’exposition, Robert Lubar Messeri résuma la série de collages/dessins des Métamorphoses du grand artiste Catalan, écrivant que "dans une suite discrète de dessins, Miró a imaginé un monde peuplé de figures monstrueuses, dont les corps convulsés semblent se transformer continuellement. Réagissant aux réalités politiques précaires de l’époque, Miró créé un monde de créatures terrifiantes". La présente œuvre fait justement partie de cette série, réalisée à Barcelone entre le 23 mars et le 4 avril 1936, qui correspond à un moment clé pour Miró, non seulement d’un point de vue personnel mais aussi artistique, avec ses recherches et influences antérieures culminant dans cet ensemble exceptionnel d’œuvres sur papier, qui déclencha par ailleurs la prochaine étape de son développement artistique.
En réinventant la technique proto-cubiste de collage initiée par Picasso et Braque en 1912-1914 puis élaborée par les surréalistes, et en la combinant avec un nouveau langage de signes inauguré en 1924, Miró met au défi plus que jamais les limites de l’espace pictural, sans pour autant tomber dans l’abstraction totale, afin de présenter une nouvelle forme de réalité, toujours ancrée dans des faits réels et imprégnée de sa poésie éternelle. Comme nous le suggère le titre de cette série, il s’agit bien d’une métamorphose physique des éléments mais aussi une métamorphose de la réalité telle qu’elle est, menacée par l’éclatement de la guerre civile en Espagne en juillet 1936. Étant donné le contexte artistique et politique de la création de la série des Métamorphoses de Miró, ces collages/dessins d’une apparente légèreté, suggérée par les couleurs vives et la technique quasi minimaliste utilisée, représentent une parenthèse mais aussi un stimulus pour l’ardente production d’œuvres chargées de violence précédant et suivant la série des Métamorphoses, comme si l’artiste reprenait son souffle, cherchait un refuge temporaire dans cette nouvelle réalité, espérant que la réalité se "métamorphose".
Robert Lubar Messeri, in the exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of a recent show entitled Joan Miró: Materiality and Metamorphosis, (Fundação de Serralves, Porto, October 2016-June 2017), summed up the great Catalan artist’s seminal Metamorphosis series of collage/drawings as follows, "in discrete suites of drawings Miró imagined a world of monstrous figures whose contorted bodies seem to morph continually. Responding to the precarious political realities of his day, Miró gave form to a world of terrifying creatures". The present work is precisely from this same series, executed in Barcelona between 23rd March and 4th April 1936, a pivotal time for Miró, both on a personal and artistic front.
Re-inventing the proto-Cubist technique of collage first proposed by Picasso and Braque’s experiments of 1912-1914 and later explored by the Surrealists, by combining it with a new visual language of signs, that he had started to create in 1924, Miró challenged more than ever the boundaries of the pictorial space, yet never pushing it towards total abstraction, to present a new reality, that is always based on true facts and infused with his boundless poetry. As hinted by the series’ title, this work represents the physical metamorphosis of elements, but most importantly the metamorphosis of reality, threatened by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936. Given the artistic and political context of the procreation of Miró’s Metamorphosis series, these seemingly playful collage/drawings, as hinted by the bright colours and almost minimalist technique; appear like a parenthesis but also a stimulus for the artist’s fiery production of violence-loaded works dating from before and after the Metamorphosis series, as if he was catching his breath, seeking for a temporary refuge in this new reality, hoping for the "metamorphosis" of reality.
