Dans Composition avec deux oiseaux, deux personnages stylisés se font face. Évoquant chacun la créature totémique de l’artiste dénommée «Loplop», cette figure dominante et énigmatique n’est pas sans présenter quelques traits de son créateur, qui, lui-même vieillissant, tend à ressembler de plus en plus à un volatile. Si les oiseaux ont toujours joué un rôle essentiel dans l’imaginaire de l’artiste, Loplop apparait de manière récurrente dans l’œuvre de Max Ernst à partir de 1930. L’artiste le décrit d’ailleurs comme “le Supérieur des Oiseaux, une créature privée qui m’est très attachée et toute dévouée” (cité in M. Ernst, Œuvres de 1919 à 1936, Paris, 1937, p. 24). Sorte d’alter ego spirituel, muse et guide entraînant l’artiste vers les tréfonds de son imagination, Loplop est susceptible de toutes les métamorphoses. Passant du règne animal à celui des objets, tantôt coq ou serpent, tantôt chevalet, le personnage de Loplop joue le rôle d’intermédiaire dans l’art de Max Ernst. Ici représenté sur le fond mouvementé d’une palette bleu-blanc-rouge brossée de noir, l’oiseau double qui tente en vain de se combattre (ou de se réunir ?), attire notre attention sur les mystérieux questionnements de l’artiste. Cette confrontation identitaire peut être à rapprocher de son année d’exécution, 1958, année où la France embrasse la cinquième république et où Max Ernst devient citoyen français.
In Composition avec deux oiseaux, two stylised characters confront one another. Each evoking the artist’s totemic creature dubbed “Loplop”, this dominant and enigmatic figures suggest certain features of its creator who, aging himself, tends to appear increasingly volatile. Although birds always played an essential role in Max Ernst’s imaginary world, Loplop appeared repeatedly in his work after 1930. The artist himself described him as “the Superior of birds, a private creature to whom I am deeply attached and wholly devoted” (quoted in M. Ernst, Œuvres de 1919 à 1936, Paris, 1937, p. 24). As a kind of spiritual alter ego, muse and guide leading the artist into the depths of his imagination, Loplop was capable of countless metamorphoses, moving from the kingdom of animals to the realm of things, sometimes a cock or a snake, sometimes an easel, Loplop acted as an intermediary in the art of Max Ernst. Depicted here against a lively blue, white and red background brushed with black, the double bird which vainly tries to confront itself (or perhaps to reunite with itself?) draws our attention to the mysterious questions the artist asked himself. This questionning of identity no doubt immerged here in 1958 because this was the year, when France was establishing its Fifth Republic and Max Ernst became a French citizen.
