De retour à Paris à l’automne 1906, après un séjour à Gósol, Pablo Picasso s’intéresse au motif de la femme à sa toilette ou se coiffant, sujet de prédilection des artistes depuis toujours. De nombreux tableaux et dessins réalisés au cours de ces années où le modèle est représenté debout, assis ou à genoux attestent ainsi de l’intense recherche de Picasso sur ce motif. La sculpture la plus ambitieuse et aboutie que Picasso ait réalisée sur le sujet est certainement Femme se coiffant. Si cette œuvre fait référence à une Vénus accroupie antique, elle n’est pas sans évoquer également les bains turcs d’Ingres que Picasso admirait tant. Conçue d’abord en terre cuite dans l’atelier de son compatriote Paco Durrio, ancien ami et collectionneur de l’œuvre de Paul Gauguin, elle sera par la suite fondue en bronze. L’influence des sculptures de Gauguin, évidente pour Femme se coiffant, est d’autant plus probante que Picasso a pu voir une grande rétrospective de son œuvre sculpté au Salon d’Automne de 1906 dans laquelle figurait le fameux Oviri réalisé en 1894 et aujourd’hui conservé au Musée d’Orsay. Fernande Olivier, alors maîtresse et muse de Picasso, a certainement été le modèle dont s’est inspiré Picasso pour Femme se coiffant, ici transfigurée en Vénus antique aux accents plus primitifs que l’Oviri de Gauguin.
On his return to Paris in the autumn of 1906, after a stay in Gósol, Pablo Picasso became interested in the motif of a woman combing her hair or washing, a favourite subject of artists throughout history. Many pictures and drawings created at that time where the model is depicted standing, sitting or kneeling demonstrate Picasso’s intense exploration of the subject. The most ambitious sculpture Picasso produced in 1906 was certainly Femme se coiffant which makes reference not only to an antique crouching Venus but also to the Turkish baths scenes of Ingres which Picasso so greatly admired. The work was first created in terracotta in the studio of his compatriot Paco Durrio, an old friend and collector of the works of Paul Gauguin, and was later cast in bronze. The influence of Gauguin’s sculptures is also significant in Femme se coiffant and is further evidence that Picasso had seen the retrospective exhibition of his sculpted works, including the famous Oviri, created in 1894, now housed at the Musée d’Orsay, at the 1906 Salon d’Automne. Fernande Olivier, Picasso’s mistress and muse at the time, was certainly the model who inspired him to create Femme se coiffant, here depicted as a Venus in the antique style but with the more primitive overtones of Gauguin’s Oviri.
