A PLASTER SCULPTURE OF NARCISSUS ON A TERRACOTTA PLINTH

In Greek Mythology Narcissus, a hunter, is one day passing a pool of water and falls in love with his own reflection, unaware that this is merely an image he is mesmerised by it and eventually dies there unable to part himself from the vision. The present lot is after the marble in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London which is thought to be a Roman sculpture re-worked, including the addition of the head, in the mid-16th century by Valerio Cioli. The raised left arm is a 19th century restoration to the original.
