A LARGE PLASTER MODEL OF ATHENA OF VELLETRI

The Ancient Greek deity Athena was the virginal Patroness of Athens, she embodied many noble qualities such as wisdom and courage and was subsequently adopted by the Romans as Minerva. The present example is after the circa 2nd century Roman example in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The present example can be seen complete and in situ circa in a photograph of the Hall of Casts which is in the archive of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Ancient Roman plaster versions of Athena have been excavated from a Roman copyists workshop at Baiae, Italy.
