THEASTER GATES (B. 1973)

Theaster Gates, a Chicago-based performance artist, creates art that deals with social issues apparent in today's world. In one of his most notable installations, See, Sit, Sup, Sing: Holding Court, which was originally performed at the Armory Show in 2012, the artist held meetings with friends and strangers alike to discuss ongoing social issues. Gates recorded the notes from his conversations on chalkboards, evoking a classroom feel. This interactive type of art highlights the importance of community and collaboration across different groups of people.
