engraving, 1592, on laid paper, without watermark, a very fine impression of New Hollstein's very rare first state (of three), trimmed on the platemark but retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the borderline
Plate & Sheet 121 x 91 mm.

British Museum, London (Lugt 303), with the stamped acquisition date 1854-6-14 and item number 213; with their duplicate stamp (Lugt 305), signed and dated 12.12.1979 by John A. G. Gere, Keeper of Prints & Drawings, 1973-1981.
Acquired in exchange from the above by the present owner.

Specialist note

New Hollstein records only four impressions of the present first state in public collections: one at the British Museum, London; one at the Lugt Collection, Paris; and two at the Albertina, Vienna. There is also a counterproof of this state in Haarlem (Collection A. van der Steur).
