The Nativity
etching, circa 1545, on laid paper, watermark Crancelin in Shield and countermark Posthorn with Cross (similar to Briquet 1220), a fine impression of this rare print, with small to narrow margins
Plate 243 x 199 mm.
Sheet 245 x 204 mm.

Probably Graf Moriz von Fries (1777-1826), Vienna (see Lugt 2903; without his mark), with the signature of his curator, Franz Rechberger (1771-1843), Vienna (Lugt 2133), dated 1807; probably von Fries' sale, Vries, Brondgeest, Engelberts & Roos, Amsterdam, 21 June 1824 (and following days), possibly Omslag No. 8, lot 99 ('School van Fontainebleau... Vijf stuks dito en een Geboorte, onbeschreven. 9,10,13,14,15' - this sheet inscribed verso in pencil: No. 9 des anonymes) (lots 79-138 for Fl. 350; to Woodburn).
With Samuel Woodburn (1786-1853), London (see Lugt 2584; without his mark); acquired at the above sale; possibly his posthumous sale, Christie's, London, 5 June 1854 (and following days), lots 276 or 710 (?).
British Museum, London (Lugt 301); with their duplicate stamp (Lugt 305), initialled by John Kendall Rowlands, Keeper of Prints & Drawings, 1981-91.
