Peinte en 1959, la Composition en rouge de Serge Poliakoff porte à son paroxysme l’enseignement que le peintre tire de Malévitch, dont il visite l’exposition à la Kunsthalle de Berne la même année. « Il m’a démontré une fois de plus le rôle capital de la vibration de la matière », explique Poliakoff au sujet de son aîné (cité in Brütsch, Serge Poliakoff 1900-1969, Neuchâtel, 1993, p. 172). Dans sa Composition, c’est un subtil camaïeu de rouges qui vibre : vermeil, carmin, pourpre ou bordeaux. Les pigments, que l’artiste mélange lui-même, sont ainsi prétexte à une succession d’effets de matières : les aplats sont fins ou épais, le geste rapide ou soutenu, les formes lisses ou agitées. Elles créent sur la toile cette harmonie visuelle extatique si propre à l’œuvre de Poliakoff.
Largement reconnu au cours de la décennie 1950, le peintre russe immigré à Paris travaille loin du bruit du monde. Sa peinture se détache résolument de toute représentation de celui-ci. À l’image de Composition en rouge, elle se construit de dedans, et amène le regard dans un espace pictural calme, comme en suspension, prompt à une élévation spirituelle : « Quand un tableau est silencieux, cela signifie qu'il est réussi. Certains de mes tableaux commencent dans le tumulte. Ils sont explosifs. Mais je ne suis satisfait que lorsqu'ils deviennent silencieux. Une forme doit s'écouter et non pas se voir » (cité in M. Ragon, Le regard et la mémoire, Paris, 1956, p. 56).
Serge Poliakoff visited the Malevich exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern in 1959, the same year he painted Composition in Red, taking everything he had learned from the elder Russian artist to its climax. "He showed me once again the crucial role of the vibration of matter," Poliakoff said about his elder (quoted in F. Brütsch, Serge Poliakoff 1900-1969, Neuchâtel, 1993, p. 172). The work features subtle shades of vibrating red: vermeil, carmine, purple or burgundy. Poliakoff himself mixed the pigments, which are a pretext for a series of material effects: the flat areas are thin or thick, the strokes brisk or steady, the shapes smooth or agitated. They create the ecstatic visual harmony so characteristic of his work on canvas.
Widely recognized in the 1950s, the Russian-born painter immigrated to Paris but worked far from the noise of the world. His painting resolutely stands out from any representation of it. Like Composition in Red, it is constructed from within, and brings the gaze into a calm pictorial space, as if in suspension, to prompt spiritual elevation. "When a painting is silent,” he said, “ it is successful. Some of my paintings start in turmoil. They are explosive. But I am only satisfied when they become silent.
