Peinte en 1967 Composition abstraite de Serge Poliakoff tient, par son format exceptionnel et son exécution, de l’icône byzantine : un fond mordoré éclatant encadre deux formes emboîtées, dont les couleurs – bleu roi et rouge cinabre – évoquent la robe et le Maphorion de la Vierge. Russe immigré à Paris, Poliakoff a gardé de son enfance à Moscou un fort attachement à la spiritualité orthodoxe. Dans son recueil de 1965, Enluminures, il explicite ainsi en mots ce qu’il représente dans Composition : « Tout ce que je veux peindre est image divine et je dois être en elle, auprès d'elle, avec elle » (cité dans le catalogue d'exposition, Paris, Serge Poliakoff, Fondation Dina Vierny - Musée Maillol, p. 26).
L’ancrage de Poliakoff dans la tradition orthodoxe dialogue en peinture avec sa fascination pour les Primitifs italiens, qu’il découvre étudiant à la Slade School of Art de Londres, en 1935. Au cours de la décennie 1960, il visite également la chapelle Scrovegni de Giotto, voit les fresques de Cimabue à Saint François d’Assise. Les artistes du Trecento, peignant en détrempe, ont éveillé chez lui un intérêt durable pour la matière fine, posée en transparence. Comme dans sa Composition, irradiée par cette même qualité : les touches légères donnent à la couleur une puissance éthérée, superposées en de fines lignes translucides là où les formes s’effleurent.
L’éloquence silencieuse qui émane de sa Composition ne doit par ailleurs rien au hasard. Afin d’obtenir la juste vibration tonale, Poliakoff a mélangé lui-même ses poudres. Le travail des formes atteint également un équilibre visuel recherché. Construites de dedans, car détachées de toute image du réel, elles sont seules en déséquilibre, repliées sur elles-mêmes ou en expansion. Ensemble, elles donnent toutefois voix à une harmonie complémentaire.
La peinture de Poliakoff mêle en cela à la tradition un ancrage résolu dans la modernité, celle de l’abstraction d’après-guerre. Cela explique sans nul doute le succès qu’il remporte de son vivant, et notamment au cours de la décennie 1960 : il bénéficie d’une rétrospective à la Whitechapel Art Gallery à Londres, en 1963 ; expose à Venise, Tokyo ou Saint-Gall dans les années qui suivent. C’est que cette peinture, libérée de la figuration du monde, parvient à communiquer une multitude d’évocations ineffables : « Beaucoup de gens disent que dans la peinture abstraite, il n'y a rien. Quant à moi, je sais que si ma vie était trois fois plus longue, elle ne m'aurait pas suffi à dire tout ce que j'y vois » (Poliakoff cité in Poliakoff. Le rêve des formes, Beaux-Arts éditions, Paris, 2013, p. 36).
Painted in 1967, Composition abstraite by Serge Poliakoff, with its unusual format and execution, is evocative of a Byzantine icon: a radiant bronze background frames two nestled shapes whose colours – royal blue and cinnabar red – call to mind the dress and maphorion of the Madonna. Poliakoff, a Russian who migrated to Paris, remained deeply attached to the Orthodox faith of his childhood in Moscow. In his 1965 collection, Enluminures, he explained in words what he depicted in Composition: "All that I want to paint is divine imagery and I must be in it, near it and with it" (quoted in the Serge Poliakoff exhibition catalogue, Paris, Fondation Dina Vierny - Musée Maillol, p. 26).
In his painting, Poliakoff's grounding in the Orthodox tradition is in dialogue with his fascination for the Italian Primitives, which he discovered as a student at the Slade School of Art in London in 1935. In the 1960s, he also visited Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel and saw Cimabue's frescoes at the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. The artists of the Trecento, painting in distemper, awakened in him a lasting interest in that fine medium applied in transparency. As in his Composition, which radiates the same quality: the light touches give the colour an ethereal power, layered in fine, translucent lines where the shapes graze one another.
The silent eloquence that emerges from his Composition owes nothing to chance. To obtain just the right tonal vibration, Poliakoff blended his powders himself. His working of the forms also attains the visual balance he sought. Built from within, because they are detached from any images of reality, alone they appear out of balance - turned in on themselves or expanding. But, together, they voice a complementary harmony.
Thus, Poliakoff's painting mingles with tradition a firm footing in modernity, the modernism of post- war abstract art. That surely explains the success he achieved during his lifetime and especially during the 1960s: he earned a retrospective at Whitechapel Art Gallery in London in 1963, and was shown in Venice, Tokyo and St. Gallen in the following years. His painting - freed from worldly figuration - managed to convey a multitude of ineffable impressions: "Many people say that there is nothing in abstract painting. But I know that if my life were three times longer, it would still not be long enough to say everything I see in it," (Poliakoff quoted in Poliakoff. Le rêve des formes, Beaux-Arts Éditions, Paris, 2013, p. 36).

On occasion, Christie's has a direct financial interest in lots consigned for sale which may include guaranteeing a minimum price or making an advance to the consignor that is secured solely by consigned property.
