Professeur au Black Mountain College (où il enseigne notamment à Cy Twombly et Robert Rauschenberg) et à Yale (où ses élèves ont pour noms Robert Mangold, Brice Marden ou encore Richard Serra), Josef Albers commence ses Hommages au carré dans les années 1950 et les poursuit jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Emergeant dans le contexte de sa formation au Bauhaus auprès de Johannes Ittens et Vassily Kandinsky, le recours systématique à la forme carrée permet à Albers d’explorer les innombrables possibilités offertes par la couleur : « la couleur est mon langage, dit-il ainsi. Je ne rends pas ‘hommage au carré’. Le carré est seulement le plat dans lequel je sers mon obsession de la couleur ».
Ainsi, en juxtaposant des carrés colorés encastrés les uns dans les autres – dans At night, un bleu intense encadrant deux carrés gris anthracite et noir – Albers donne libre cours à ses recherches sur la façon dont une couleur revêt une tonalité différente en fonction de celle auprès de laquelle elle est placée : tantôt plus lumineuse, tantôt plus sombre ; paraissant s’extraire ou au contraire s’enfoncer dans la composition. Comme la montagne Sainte-Victoire chez Cézanne ou la cathédrale de Rouen pour Monet, le carré se révèle in fine le prétexte aux investigations artistiques d’Albers, son véhicule d’exploration.
La granulosité du panneau d’isorel sur lequel l’artiste applique la peinture directement depuis le tube en une succession de couches épaisses permet par ailleurs à la lumière de venir s’accrocher sur la surface et confère à ses œuvres une vibration singulière. Par son intense luminosité crépusculaire, At night exprime combien de simples plans de couleurs peuvent porter en eux une charge émotionnelle puissante. Car au fond, les Hommages au carré d’Albers portent en eux une leçon universelle, que l’artiste exprime avec ses mots : « Lorsque l’on comprend que toute couleur change au contact d’un environnement changeant, alors on saisit que cette leçon s’applique autant la couleur qu’à la vie elle-même ».

The granular texture of the hardboard panel to which the artist applied paint directly from the tube in thick, successive layers allows the light to cling to the surface and brings a singular vibration to the works. With its intense, twilight hues, At Night conveys how a powerful emotional charge can be carried in simple swaths of solid colour. Because, at their heart, Albers's Homages to the Square impart a universal lesson, which the artist expressed in words: "When you really understand that each colour is changed by a changed environment, you eventually find that you have learned about life as well as about colour."
