Specialist note

Artist Wang Xiaosong's signature style is defined by dramatic, strong colours. In the complex assemblage of symbols and texture, the viewer's interest is piqued, and they become drawn into the dimensions on the canvas for an adventure. Neutrality features three primary colours: blue, red and yellow in the base layer, on which Wang assembled many symbol-like characters with impasto to give the canvas a rough, textile feel. These symbols are manifested in hollowed arrangement with noticeable strength; the powerful strokes dance to the rhythm of Chinese writing; they also seem to image cuneiform characters.

Wang's creative language signifies a break from paintings' two-dimensionality: it wanders between the abstract and the figurative, and he choreographs a sculptural dimension on a canvas.
