The inventory of Campana's estate of 29 October 1786 (J.-J. Guiffrey, 'Scellés et inventaires d'artistes. CCCLXIV. Ignace-Jean-Victor Campana', Nouvelles Archives de l'Art français, 2nd series, vol. VI, 1885, p. 196) lists 'Un portrait en miniature trois quarts, de forme ronde, pour dessus de tabatière, représentant une femme vêtue en laitière tenant en ses mains un pot au lait, led. portrait sous son cristal', which would correspond to the present miniature.
