Charlotte Clayton, née Dyve, wife of William Clayton (see lot 61), was the grand-daughter of Sir Lewis Dyve of Bromham, Bedfordshire, and daughter of his youngest son, John, and his wife Frances, third daughter of Sir Robert Wolseley of Wolseley. On the accession of George I in 1714, Charlotte Clayton was appointed a lady of the bedchamber to Queen Caroline, Princess of Wales, to whom she became a close friend and confidante over the years.
