inscribed 'William Clayton of Sundon in the/County of Bedford one of the Right/Honorable the Lords Commoners of the/Treasury in the late Reign of/George the first and to his Present/Majesty George the second Married to/Charlott [sic] second Daughter of John/Dive Esq.' (centre left); and with the conjoined coat-of-arms of the Clayton and Dive families (lower right)

by descent to the present owner.

Specialist note

William Clayton, 1st Baron Sundon, was MP for Woodstock, St Albans, Westminster, Plympton Erle and St Mawes. Another, later portrait of the sitter by Kneller, dated 1719, is now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, another version of which is also in the Government Art Collection, London.
