Specialist note
A version of the picture, which is recorded as autograph, by Dr. Eric Larsen, in which he compared the nude of Diana to that in van Dyck's Amaryllis and Mirtillo (Göteborg Musem, Sweden, and Galleria Sabauda, Turin).
Diana and two maidens lie sleeping in the shade of a tree, the spoils of their hunt scattered beside them, unaware of the mischievous and lascivious Satyr about to spring out and surprise them. The scene is one of serenetiy, yet Diana's provocative pose alludes to the ensuing corruption of innocence.
