Specialist note

While traditionally identified as Mark Currie (1682-1761) (according to an old label on the reverse), the sitter may in fact be his son, William Currie of London (1721-1781). Generally known as a banker, in his will (dated 20 March 1780) William described himself as a malt distiller.
