Specialist note
While traditionally identified as a portrait of Sir Bulstrode Whitelock, this painting, executed by Thomas Murray, dates to the late 17th, or early 18th century, and is therefore likely to represent another member of the family. The following lot, by Michael Dahl, was traditionally identified as Bulstrode's second wife, Frances.
Caynham Court, Ludlow, was purchased by Sir William Curtis, 3rd Bt (1804-1870), in 1852. After the death of his grandson, Sir William Michael Curtis, 4th Bt (1859-1916), the house was purchased from his widow by Edward Beaumont Cotton Curtis, whose son Peter succeeded in 1943 as Sir Peter Curtis, 6th Bt (1907-1976) and sold Caynham Court in 1945.
