Specialist note
We would like to thank the Hassam catalogue raisonné committee for their assistance with cataloguing this work.
This work will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
The present work depicts the historic building Castle Garden, today known as the Castle Clinton National Monument, located in Battery Park in lower Manhattan. Originally built in 1811 as a fort to protect New York from the British during the War of 1812, the building most notably functioned as the United States’ first immigration center from 1855 until 1890, predating the more well-known Ellis Island. It is estimated that, during its years of operation, eight to twelve million immigrants entered America through its doors. Since then, the building has served as a beer garden, exhibition hall, theater and, since 1946, a national monument. In 1896, around the time Childe Hassam painted Castle Garden, it became the site of the New York City Aquarium, one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Castle Garden was originally owned by The Players Club of New York, where Hassam was a member from 1890 to 1931.
