Specialist note

The present work captures Rocky Marciano at the moment of becoming the World Heavyweight Champion after knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round of their famous September 23rd, 1952 match-up. One of the boxing greats, Marciano would go on to defend his crown until his retirement. In 1954, Fletcher Martin produced a series of illustrations for Sports Illustrated depicting Marciano defending his title against former champion Ezzard Charles. Unfortunately, Marciano died in a small plane crash at the young age of 45 in 1969, and Martin painted the present homage that same year.
