Urwerk was created following a meeting between brothers and watchmakers Felix and Thomas Baumgartner, and their friend Martin Frei, an artist and designer. Urwerk SA was officially launched in 1997, with the intention of following their own path and pushing the boundaries of haute horologie. The name was inspired by the Sumerian city of Ur, and the German word Werk. The Sumerian people marked the passage of time with moving shadows casts by obelisks, specifically the course of a year partitioned into twelve units. The German word Werk means to work, create, and evolve.
In 2007 Urwerk presented it's iconic 103 model with a TiAlN-coated steel case, one of the hardest known in the watch world. A TiAlN coating less than 4 microns thick will have an effect on the watch of resisting the underlying metal to scratches and shocks, and even acids. The color of the metal is dependent on the ratio of Titanium and Aluminum in the alloy, so the case color can range from a bronze to a dark black, even a purplish hue, as seen on the present watch.
