Specialist note

Coenraet Roepel started as a pupil of the portrait painter Constantijn Netscher. His poor health, however, drove him outdoors into his garden where he began to paint flowers and fruit. In this he proved to be very successful and his still lifes were highly appraised, not only in his native town of The Hague, but also abroad, where he worked for a year in 1716 in the service of the Elector Palatine at Dusseldorf. After 1716 he continued to work successfully in The Hague for the rest of his life.
