Frans Francken II (Antwerp 1581-1642)

This painting is a typical example of Frans Francken's representation of witchcrafts that he produced in series. The present lot is very close to two other known versions, among them, the one in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, signed and dated 1606 (inv.no. 128). The iconography recalls the traditional conception of the witches oscillating between beauty and horror, sensuality and lust.
