Specialist note
The form and decoration of this elegantly restrained commode reflect the prevailing influence of neo-classical architectural motifs on furniture-makers at the end of the 18th Century. The distinctive pattern of cross-inset oval medallions flanked by floral medallions to the side panels is also found on a serpentine commode purchased by Viscount Leverhulme from M. Harris and Sons in 1919 (L. Wood, The Lady Lever Art Gallery Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, p.191).
