Finely painted and hand-tooled in white slip with Cupid standing before an anvil wielding a sledgehammer as a kneeling maiden and a warrior allow him to sever a chain that binds them
8½ in. (21.5 cm.) wide; 6½ in. (16.5 cm.) high

Specialist note

The design of the central Cupid on the present plaque relates very closely to a pair of monumental vases created by Solon for the Paris Universelle Exposition, 1878. On one of the pair a frieze of putti wield sledge hammers in an effort to gain freedom from being chained to stumbling blocks.
