Signed Rolex, Perpetual, ref. 8171, movement nos. 20'556 and G 99744, case no. 037, manufactured in 1950

A.295 CPL nickel-finished lever movement, 18 jewels, silvered dial, applied baton numerals, outer blue date ring with central date hand, two windows for day and month, subsidiary dial for moon phases and constant seconds, large circular case, calendar correctors in the band, snap on back, gilt Rolex buckle, case, dial and movement signed
38 mm. diam.

Specialist note

Rolex has produced only two different models of moonphase wristwatches, references 8171 and 6062. Both models are automatic, however reference 8171 has a snap on back, while reference 6062, the Oyster version, is fitted with a water-resistant-type screw back.

Reference 8171 was made in a small series between 1949 and 1952, mostly in yellow gold. Examples in pink gold or in stainless steel are very rare.

The present "Padellone", as reference 8171 is affectionately called by collectors, is consigned by a private gentleman and stands out by its very original and charismatic condition. It does not hide its age, on the contrary it is a wonderful messenger for why vintage Rolexes are the most rewarding collectors watches of all times.
