A DIRECTOIRE MAHOGANY AND IRON METAMORPHIC SETTEE
CIRCA 1795, IN THE MANNER OF JOSEPH GENGENBACH, dit CANABAS
The arched rectangular back, sides and seat covered in close-nailed green hide, the fluted uprights with panelled block terminals, on fluted baluster legs joined by iron trelliswork with mahogany steps, on brass anti-friction castors, the treads possibly replaced
34 in. (86 cm.) high; 40¼ in. (102 cm.) wide; 22¾ in. (58 cm.) deep

Specialist note

The chinese paling of the iron framework of the steps is particularly associated with Canabas and the restrained goût Anglais introduced to France in the late 18th century.
