Specialist note

Very little is known about Octavianus Montfort, to whom has been attributed a small group of vivid still lifes and devotional paintings on vellum. He is however known to have worked in Piedmont, and may well have been a student of Giovanna Garzoni (1600-1670) when she was working at the court of Christine of France, Duchess of Savoym from 1632 to 1637 (S. Meloni Trkulja and E. Fumagalli, Still Lifes: Giovanna Garzoni, Paris, 2000, p. 6).
