Specialist note

One of a small group of studies, all in black and red chalk and of similar dimensions, which can be associated with Callot's Fair at Impruneta, one of his most famous prints. Although most of the drawings from this group are now at the Uffizi, Florence (D. Ternois, op. cit., nos. 251-303), others are in the Hermitage and in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle. Two further drawings, which like the present example were in the collections of Dimsdale and Witt, were part of the latter's bequest to the Courtauld Institute of Art (D. Ternois, op. cit., nos. 395-6).
