Specialist note

Verschuring was in Italy from 1646 to 1654. Following his return to the Netherlands he specialized in military and equestrian subjects, but the Italian influence remained, as shown by a drawing of A horse fair in the Roman Forum in the Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig (inv. no. I.444), closely comparable to the present drawing and of similar size and technique, which is dated 1664. Another drawing of the Campo Vaccino, undated, is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle (C. White and C. Crawley, The Dutch and Flemish Drawings ... at Windsor Castle, Cambridge, 1994, no. 488).
