Consigned by an importante private collector, the present timepiece has been preserved with care and is furthermore fresh to the auction market. Elegant and attractive, it is part of a limited edition of 150 examples crafted in platinum and made to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Cartier in 1997.
The Tank wristwatch was created by Louis Cartier in 1917 during World War I. It is inspired by the historical Tank à Guichet model launched in the late 1920s, the first Cartier Jumping hour wristwatch, which attracted the likes of many including the Maharaja of Patiala, a great patron of Cartier.
This model is illustrated and described in Cartier - The Tank Watch, by Franco Cologni, pp. 206 & 250.
