“I initially took the idea from my father, who obsessively draws on napkins. He uses ballpoint pens and coffee shop napkins. He has literally thousands of them in Ziploc bags stored under his bed. I use Walgreen’s ballpoint pens and paper, as I can find them wherever I am, without ever entering an art store. The first image came from a homeless person living on 22nd street and Bryant street. His hair and beard were unforgettable, perfect groom, bluish black. I am, to this day, still haunted by the starkness of his image.” – Barry McGee (Don’t Look)
