Study for the Morgan (a Certain Slant…) is a study for Finch’s large-scale, site-specific installation at the Morgan library of colored glass, exhibited from 2014-2015. The installation was inspired by the Morgan library’s collection of medieval Books of Hours – hand-painted personal prayer books for different times of day and periods of the year. In the installation, Finch applied films of color to the windows of the four-story, glass-enclosed Gilbert Court at the museum, also hanging additional glass panes in the center of the court. Finch grouped the panes of glass by month, each reflecting a seasonal palette, as well as a strip of red panes to indicate the sun’s arc across the court. The light and color in the room thus dances and moves throughout the day depending on the weather patterns and progression of the sun. This specific work on paper depicts the spring season, with its jewel-toned greens, blues, pinks and yellows.
