A FINE SILVER TEAPOT

Three teapots of this typically New York form by Peter van Dyck are known. In addition to the present example, one teapot is engraved on base with contemporary intials IEL, and sold in these Rooms, 18 October 1986, lot 87. The third teapot, nearly identical, except for the sockets, is illustrated in Kathryn C. Buhler and Graham Hood, American Silver: Garvan and Other Collections in the Yale University Art Gallery, 1970, no. 594, pp. 48-49.

The engraved crest is that of Maitland. The monogram on the base is probably that of Elizabeth Loutit (1732- after 1750), the great aunt of Elizabeth Sproat Lenox. Elizabeth Loutit's mother, Elizabeth van Dyck, was a first cousin, once removed of Peter van Dyck.
