Launched in 1967, the Sea-Dweller reference 1665 was the first Rolex wristwatch designed for use in saturation diving, and was fitted with a Rolex patent valve in the band. It was guaranteed waterproof to 610 meters depth. The gas valve was first developed on the Submariner model, and allowed helium and other gases to escape, which would enable the watch to stand compression at such depths.

The present watch features a dial from the "Mark IV" series. The reference 1665 Sea-Dweller is often referred to as "Great White" by collectors, because all of the print on the dial is white. The white printing on this particular watch contrasts nicely with the luminous numerals and hands, which are a warm yellow tone. The case, having never been polished, features beautifully beveled edges, making this crisp example collectible.
