CIRCA 1856-62, THE BLADE PROBABLY 18TH CENTURY
With earlier curved watered steel blade from a shamshir with a gold-damascened baduh and a lobed medallion with Persian inscription in Arabic script, gilt-brass hilt cast and chased on each side with scrollwork, a laurel wreath, and a crossed sword and baton, ivory grips-scales (loose, both chipped at base), and bullion-thread sword-knot, in original red-velvet-covered scabbard with gilt-brass mounts engraved with flowering foliage, and with regulation-type brass field scabbard

Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning (1812-1862) and by descent to Hubert George de Burgh-Canning, 2nd Marquess of Clanricarde (1832- 1916) by whom bequeathed his great-nephew,
Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1947), and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire.
