Each with a cartouche-shaped central plate within a frame carved and fitted with mirrored slips and scrolling foliage, each cresting centered by a large foliate clasp and with a base centered by conforming C-scrolls, the plates mostly re-used from an earlier 18th century mirror, re-gilt

In their elaborate design, bold proportion, distinctively exaggerated rockwork and florid exuberance, these Scottish pier-glasses can be compared to examples supplied by William Mathie (fl.1733-60) of Cockenzie to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries for the State Rooms at Dumfries House, circa 1759 (see Christie's catalogue, Dumfries House, 13 July 2007, lots 55, 80 and 240). The reuse of earlier mirror plates is seen frequently in Mathie's work, for instance in the pier glass in Lady Bute's Upstair's Bedroom (lot 240 in the Christie's catalogue cited above), at Dumfries.
