AN ENGLISH DELFT POLYCHROME BLUE-DASH 'GREEN MAN' CHARGER
CIRCA 1720, PROBABLY LONDON, LAMBETH HIGH STREET
Naively painted in blue, yellow and green, the 'Green Man' holding a green club over his right shoulder and with a band of foliage about his waist flanked by two two-tiered trees with blue branches, on a striped green and yellow mound within a concentric double blue line and yellow band border and blue--dash rim, the underside with a white slip tin-glaze, cracks to rim at 12 and 9 o'clock, glaze fault to left hand tree, some minor flaking to rim and a small flake to back
14 in. (35.6 cm.) diameter

A closely related charger from the Robert Hall Warren Collection, formerly in the Harland Collection, was sold at Sotheby's London, 11 February 1931, lot 115. An example almost certainly by the same hand is illustrated by Anthony Ray, English Delftware Pottery, London, 1968, p. 4, no. 12 whilst a similar example with the subject reversed from the G. F. Glenny Collection was sold at Sotheby's London, 29 May 1956, lot 32.
