Jan Habbema formed a vast and important collection of Chinese art whilst stationed as a high official in Bojonegoro in the Dutch East Indies, until 1936.

Two mandarin ducks symbolise fidelity and conjugal bliss and are invariably shown with the lotus, ‘he' or ‘lian', homonyms for ‘harmony’ and ‘continuous’. In this context similar groups are a frequent subject in Chinese art and appropriate wedding gifts.
