Alfred Henry Maurer (1868-1932)

Referring to the place of the present work and Woman in a Garden (circa 1907, Hofstra University Museum, Hempstead, New York) within Alfred Maurer's oeuvre, Sheldon Reich writes, "The landscapes that survive from this period--about 1906 or 1907 to 1914, the year of his departure for New York--are relatively few. Even here, however, can be detected some notes of transition. The two landscapes with a figure, begun in a rather impressionist vein, end in the large forcefulness of Fauvism." (Alfred H.
