Edmund Cotterill (1795-1860) produced a related ewer-form cup for Garrard's display at the 1851 Great Exhibition. That cup, depicting the Eighth Labor of Hercules, was awarded as Ascot's Emperor's Cup in 1850, and is illustrated in John Culme, Nineteenth Century Silver, 1977, p. 158.
Cotterill ran Garrard's design studio from 1833 until his death and he designed numerous race cups, including all four Emperor's Cups from 1848-52. His choice of subject matter was diverse, as here, he employed North American imagery of a buffalo hunt.
