Extensive portion, comprising the first 22 volumes of this comprehensive and richly illustrated flora of the Netherlands. The ‘Batavi’ were ancient Germanic tribe from whom ‘Batavia’, a poetic name for the Netherlands, is derived. J.C. Sepp initiated the publication and was responsible for the first 13 volumes; other publishers then carried on the project which spanned a total 134 years. The entire series comprises 28 volumes and 2,240 plates, with the last volume published in 1934. Great Flower Books (1990) p.108; Nissen BBI 2247; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 3874.
23 volumes, comprising: vols 1-12, quarto (300 x 240mm), a duplicate of vol. 12, quarto (283 x 220mm); vols. 13-22, quarto (307 x 250mm). 1,829 engraved and lithographic hand-coloured plates, 9 uncoloured plates, some of the plates folding or double-page (vols. 16 and 18 lacking titles, vol. 9 lacking 3 plates, viz 714, 717 and 718; overall a clean copy, with only some variable offsetting and light spotting). Mixed set, contemporary or later quarter calf or roan over marbled boards, gilt-titled on spine (some wear to edges, corners sometimes bumped). Provenance: some pencilled annotations on plates. Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return.
