NATHAN THEODORE FIELDING (SOWERBY, NEAR HALIFAX 1747- C.1814? LIVERPOOL)
An extensive evening view of Rough Hey Wood, Sowerby, near Halifax, Yorkshire, and the surrounding lands
signed, inscribed and dated ‘N. T. Fielding / Del. et Pinxt. / A View / of / Rough Hay Wood / and Lands adjacent / 1782’ (lower left, on the stone wall)
oil on canvas
56 1/2 x 68 1/2 in. (143.5 x 173.9 cm.)

By descent in the Stansfeld family; Sotheby’s, London, 13 July 1988, lot 67, when acquired by the present owner.

Specialist note

This view is taken from above Stansfeld Bridge and shows the prospect of the Rybur Valley towards Rough Hey House and woods. It appears that the two different perspectives of the Stansfeld estate were painted from the same position, perhaps from the hillside of Nether Ends Beck. This would have allowed the artist to depict his view of Field House from the south and the companion view of Rough Hey woods from the west.
